Arbit’s Social Responsibility – GiveIndia

Tuesday - March 2nd, 2004
‘Arbit Choudhury’s Social Responsibility’ section is the place where Arbit, his friends and his Creators will extend their whole hearted support to Social Projects and Awareness Campaigns. Though Arbit Choudhury is all about humor, we would like to utilize Arbit’s popularity do your little bit for important social causes.

GiveIndia

GiveIndia is a donation platform that does not raise funds for itself but helps you donate to more than 150 NGOs that help the poorest of the poor in India. They screen grassroot level NGOs for transparency and credibility. GiveIndia also tells you exactly where your money went with proof of it.
In essence, GiveIndia is a trustworthy way to help Indians living in poverty while saving some Taxes as well :-) Arbit also feels that giving aid to underprivileged people is one kind of aid which works!
On the occasion of Independece Day in 2009, we supported the You can make a difference for just 1000! campaign by GiveIndia.
Again in January 2010, we supported their participation in the Chase Community Giving Event, where 100 NGOs competed for USD 1 million on Facebook.
The entire Arbit Team (Arbit, his friends and his Creators) extend a helping hand to the under-privileged Indians by announcing their support to GiveIndia. We would appreciate all the Arbit fans who would come forward and help such initiatives.
Contact GiveIndia Coordinator: Ms. Amita Chauhan (info@giveindia.org)

Your feedback & suggestions on this new section on Social Responsibility are welcome. If you think Arbit Choudhury can help some other Social Responsibility Projects, we would like to hear from you about them. Trends

Growth in Web comics

Increasingly the comics industry is moving its wares online – since the advent of the internet several webcomics have been launched and made their way to the mainstream media.

India Laughing
More so India too is becoming the hot bed for all kinds of entertainment channels including comics thanks to the large young population it has.

Increasing Internet Penetration

A survey conducted by AC Neilsen (Corporate Decision Makers (DMS) Survey 6) indicates that 98% of Corporates had access to Internet in 2006 while the same figure was only 81% in 2005.

With Internet penetration increasing, webcomics are bound to become more popular in India. More so, even in print people tend to recognize those comics which also have a strong presence and brand in the online world which will become the dominant form of enterntainment consumption.

Increasing MBA mindspace
MBA – that’s the world in the mind of every second engineering graduate in India says the ACNielsen Campus Track T-Schools’05 survey.
The trend has been seen over the past couple of years with MBA becoming more attractive than M-Tech/ MS over the years.

Students across the country are increasingly opting for management related qualifications increasing the mindspace of management comics as well in the society as a whole. Management Consultancy also follows IT Software as the favourite career in premier engineering campuses.

The idea Factory
Here at Team Arbit we take our business of creating humour very seriously. Each Comic Idea we come up with or receive from fans is rated, classified, and inventorised.

Rating – Each Arbit idea is rated as per the ‘Comic Strip Suitability Standard’ (CS3) by the creator trio as well as by a 7 member Panel for Ideas Evaluation (PIE) before it can become a part of our idea bank. Only top rated ideas get published finally!

Inventory Variety – We have till date released more than 150 comics, but we have more than 200% ideas in our idea bank. The idea bank also spreads across a wide variety like Management Jargon / MBA Education / Current affairs or occasion based (V-day etc) / Social Resp / Placement related. Check the tag-cloud in the sidebar for a complete list.

Feedback – We constantly seek feedback from fans on released ideas which is fed back to the creator trio to improve rating and thus improve the CS3 itself.

Where we fit in ?
Maturity of Indian Publication industry

Indian Publication industry has matured over the years in line with the Indian style of management. Business journalism, industry metrics analysis, case studies and columns in Indian Business publications are now built around the Indian industry milieu rather than copy-pasting from the western management world.

We still rely on the western world for Humour
However, we still rely on the western world for management humour. At this point in time, when the Indian industry is poised to spread its wings beyond the national boundaries into the global arena, the Indian management style has developed enough to deserve its own flavour of management humour.
Also by studying the Comics Industry’s Trends, Internet Trends and rise in numbers of Management Professionals (see figures quoted above), we are confident that we can build upon our current popularity and become a valuable add-on asset for publishers.

Arbit Choudhury rightly placed
As is clearly demonstrated by its growth and wide span of fan following, Arbit Choudhury comics is rightly placed to not only occupy the vacant spot in the Indian publication industry but also to represent Indian management style in the global arena.

Enhances Your Offering
Arbit Choudhury has already demonstrated his potential to connect to the minds of the growing audience of Management professionals. Publishing Arbit Choudhury Comics will surely enhance your publication’s bouquet of offerings. We expect Arbit to capture sizeable mindshare in print as well – giving your readers another reason to buy the latest issue of the publication.

RSS Feeds

What is RSS ?

Simply put, RSS is just another way for you to receive the latest Comic Strip. RSS stands for “Really Simple Syndication” – it’s a format for distributing and gathering content from sources across the Web, including newspapers, magazines, and blogs.

As with an email subscription (Yahoo Group/ Mailing List), twice a month you’ll receive the latest Comic Strip. Unlike email, RSS updates won’t come to your Inbox. Instead, you’ll need to use a website or a program known as an RSS reader or an aggregator to receive them. Read on to find out how to get started.

How can I use RSS ?

Lucky for you, some of the best RSS readers are free! The easiest way to use an RSS feed is to subscribe to it using a free online reader such as Bloglines, My Yahoo, or Google Reader. These services will let you add RSS feeds to a Web page.

However, you can use offline aggregators as well. These are “stand-alone” programs known as RSS/ News Aggregators. RSS Aggregators (also called news readers) download and display RSS feeds for you. A number of free and commercial Aggregators are available for download.

To know more about RSS visit the Google FAQ or Wikipedia entry for RSS … or simply google for ‘RSS Readers’ !

Arbit Website

This website is the primary source and a permanent warehouse of Arbit content and also a platform for release of fortnightly Comic Strips. Tools and Technologies

Thursday - January 1st, 2004

Arbit Choudhury is a new age comic character – conceived, created, distributed and managed completely online. And hence various tools and technologies are indispensable for the activities of Arbit Choudhury. We would like to pay our sincere thanks and gratitude to all the creators of the tools we use.

Every Comic strip has two stages to its development – development of the idea and creation of the sketch. We use email for most of our discussions relating to finalization of ideas – among the three of us as well as with our reviewers group – PIE (Panel for Ideas Evaluation). While we are die-hard GMail users (along with its Chat feature) – we must thank all Email Service Providers (GMail, Yahoo etc) and Email Clients (Outlook/ Lotus Notes). Many of our discussions also involve Instant Messengers (IM’s) – Google Talk, Yahoo Messenger and more recently Skype. (Click here for our Gmail Story on the Google Blog.)

The ideas are managed and archived through a host of online tools like Google Documents (previously www.Writely.com) and of course Desktop Document Management Tools. All ideas get screened, rated and the whole selection is managed through a combination of Desktop Spreadsheet Software and Google Spreadsheets for collaboration purposes.

The next stage – sketching involves non-tech tools like Paper, Pencil, Eraser, Pen, Tracing paper (a.k.a. butter paper) – we thank the early man who invented these essential drawing tools ;-) . More recently we have even started use of ‘Real Backgrounds’ in our comic strips where our Sony Digital Camera’s are playing their role effectively (incidentally all 3 of us ended up buying Sony :-)

Scanners (we use HP) and Scanning Software come next, and then starts the role of Graphic / Image Editing Software (perhaps the most critical software for us) culminating in yet another chain of collaboration through email, IM’s and cell-phones for the final review, quality check and finalization of the comic strip before release.

Distribution of comic strips also involves keeping track of the milestones, events and deadlines coming up in the next few days. The Outlook calendar as well as the more recent Google Calendar have been indispensable tools to plan our activities and also to remind us of everything from the next due comic strip to next due back-up of the website.

We would also like to thank Yahoo Groups! and Orkut.com, for acting as primary modes of communication between Arbit and his fans all over the world.

Thanks to Dell, Lenovo and HP, whose laptops and desktops are used by us for our Arbit activities along with the Micro-processor providers Intel and AMD.

We would also like to thank the Blogging service providers like Blogger.com … all three of us are avid bloggers and blogs (ours as well as blogs belonging to Arbit Fans) have been instrumental in spreading the ‘word-of-mouse’ about Arbit across the globe.

Arbit would never have been a web-comic; but for the Web – our many thanks to Tim Berners Lee – for inventing the medium which we use not only to distribute the strips but also collaborate from 3 corners of the globe to create them. And, the web could never have been but for Computers: Servers & Desktops along with their Operating Systems – thanks to all who contributed to creating these – from Charles Babbage to Bill Gates and Linus Torvalds (these names are just indicative for all others who come from the same league).

To put it on record though – www.arbitmba.com is run from a Linux-Apache-MySQL based web-server. We predominantly use Internet explorer to surf the web and occasionally Firefox. We also use www.Photobucket.com to store some of our images.

And to conclude, our mobile phones are the final frontiers for us to discuss in case all other means of communication fail (We say final, considering the fact that all three of us are actually located in different parts of the globe and telephonic communication is definitely not an economical option any longer :-)

Our thanks to Nokia, Motorola, Sony Ericson, Siemens, LG (amongst the three of us, we have used mobile phones by all these companies in past 3 years) and our Mobile / Telecom service providers Airtel and Reliance Telecom (India), Virgin Mobile (UK) and Swiss Telecom (Switzerland)! Not to forget the Internet Service providers Reliance, MTNL, BSNL, Sify in India and Swisscom in Switzerland.
